• The second cable match between John Bull and ■ Uncle Sam resulted in a win for the former by 5Jr to 4J. The match seems to have excited great interest on both .sidss of the Atlantic. The Field says:— "The Prince's Hall of the Hotel Cecil was put at the disposal of the London committee. Although of imposing dimensions, however, the hall proved more inadequate for the number of visitors on the second day than on the first." The match extended over two days, and the final score was as under :— I

Lady Newnss and a number of members of the Ladies' Chess Club followed the gaine3 upon the duplicate boards with keen interest until a late hour. Another international match was played at the beginning cf the year between Victoria (British Columbia), and San Francisco, which appears to have excited much interest. The gamo at the point where a draw was agreed upon seems slightly in favour of Victoria, but is of a kind which would take a long time to bring to an end. Mr Thomas Piper with throe associates conducted the game for Victoria, and Mr W. S Franklin with three associates represented San Francisco. Arrangements have been made for a telegraphio match betwesn Victoria and New South Wales, to be played on next Queen's birthday. An annual intercolonial chess congress is spoken of, to be held at each provincial capital In turns, the first mseting to be he'd at Sydney not later than 30th beptember Dext. A South Af l loan tournament is to be played this month the prize fund of which amounts to lOOOdol. A match is being arranged between Pillabury and Shownlter for the championship of tho United States of America.
