• The second cable match between John Bull and ■ Uncle Sam resulted in a win for the former by 5Jr to 4J. The match seems to have excited great interest on both .sidss of the Atlantic. The Field says:— "The Prince's Hall of the Hotel Cecil was put at the disposal of the London committee. Lady Newnss and a number of members of the Ladies' Chess Club followed the gaine3 upon the duplicate boards with keen interest until a late hour. Another international match was played at the beginning cf the year between Victoria (British Columbia), and San Francisco, which appears to have excited much interest. It consisted of a ■■ Ringle game by telegraph, and resulted in a draw. The opening was a Buy Lopez, and the game ex-
tended to 31 moves, the San Francisco committee having the first niovo. The gamo at the point where a draw was agreed upon seems slightly in favour of Victoria, but is of a kind which would take a long time to bring to an end. Mr Thomas Piper with throe associates conducted the game for Victoria, and Mr W. S Franklin with three associates represented San Francisco. Arrangements have been made for a telegraphio match betwesn Victoria and New South Wales, to be played on next Queen's birthday.
