j The monthly meeting of tbe above council | was held aft Clinton on Friday afternoon ; present — Cr« D. R"bert*on (chairman), J. Johnston, J. M'Neil. D. A. M'Lachlan, W. Hay, J. Camming, D. Wallace, and J. R. Mitchell. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Surveyor-general, stating that the necessary authority for the expenditure of money in connection with the Kelso bridge had been istue.d. — Hatter to stand over, the authority being for £350 instead of £500, as voted by Parliament. From Under-secretary, enclosing copy of ' warrant appointing local bodies to have authority | within licensing districts, j From Robert Grigor, returning officer, stating { that the council had been appointed to be the • local authority under the Alcoholic Liquors Sale ; Control Acta 1893 and 1895, and asking for instructions as to how payment of expenses was to be paid. — The council agreed, on the motion of Crs M'Lachlan and Mitchell, not to accept any responsibility in the matter, and that it ressist being saddled with the cost. From the Chief Surveyor, asking for a reporb showing .what roads the council would recommend to be formed to give access to unsold lands during year ending 31st March, 1898, and also to forward report showing what roads were constructed to give access to unsold lands for year ending 31«t March, 1897.— T0 be attended to. From John Gow, asking what terms the stable and yard at the back of the Council Chambers would be let on. — Referred to the committee appointed to deal with the matter. From Patrick Glennan, Tahatika, claiming £40 damages caused through tbe council having ordered him to remove from land on Glenomaru Stream, and issuing a summons against the council for that amount. — Proposed by Cr Hay, seconded by Cr Johnston, that the county solicitor be instructed to resist th 9 claim. — J Carried. From J. P. Maitland, commissioner for ' Crown lands, asking for a return showing ! where certain thirds and fourths money accrued ■ should be allocated. — Referred to the clerk and I engineer to attend to. } From the Paymaster-general, enclosing 15s ! 6d, goldfields revenue for the month of January *• — Received . From the Receiver of Land Revenue, advising payment of £229 Us 7d, being thirds and fourths accrued during th» period betwesn August 3 and October 31, 1896.— Received. From John Goldsbery, Glenomaru, asking that a roadline be opened through W. Forsyth's property, and that Forsyth be compelled to keep his cattle off the road. — Letter received, and it was agreed to continue formation for 12 chains. From George Draper, Ratanui, asking for i the removal of a gate erected by James j Allen at the lower boundary of his section. — To stand over till next meeting.

From W. Nelson, Clinton, deolining to go on with his contract; of metalling tho Wairuna road, as he was misled by specifications. — Contract to be cancelled, and fresh tenders to be called. From John Sangster, Wairuna, sinking that steps be taken to let water e«c&pe through the cnlvcrt between seotions 57 and 58, Pomahaka.—Engineer to attend to the matter. From the Secretary to the Treasury, Wellington, stating that the petition from ratepayers in two portions of Richardson Riding asking to be made a " district " under section 2of the Loans to Local Bodies Act could not be granted, as the areas mentioned were not local governing areas. — Letter received. From James Steven and others, Port Molyneux, asking that a ditch leading from Puerna Stream towards Clutha River be cleared oat. — Tenders to be called for the work. • ROAD AND WORKS. The Engineer's monthly report was read and adopted. It enumerated the works in hand, and the progress made on them during the month. Tenders were accepted as follows : — Contract No. 722— J L Wjlie, £118 19i ; contract No. 723— A. Laggan. £22 10s ; contract No. 724— E. Christie, £23 9i; contract No. 726— J. Taylor, £26 13i 4d ; contract No. 727— M'Coll and Falconer, £26. The monthly pay-sheet amounting to £354 2s 9d was patsed for payment. MOTIONS. The following resolutions were passed :— Proposed by Or Johnston, seconded by Or M'Lachlan — "That tenders be called for metalling 14- chains (more or lets) on the Beach road between the properties of Messrs Hudson and Wright ; also, for metalling six chains en Ofcanomomo Swamp road, engineer to point out parts to be met»lled." Proposed by Or Gumming — " That the chairman sign the necessary agreement in connection with the Waipahi bridge." Proposed by Cr Hay, ieoonded by Cr Robertson — " That tenders be called for position of puntman for Port Molyneux punt. Succesafal applicant to have use of house in connection therewith, also to receive *1! fees." Proposed by Cr Cumsiing, seconded by ( Cr M'Lachlan — "That the engineer prepare freih plans for the Waipahi- bridge, and call for tenders for next meetiDg. Proposed by Cr Wallace, seconded by Cr M'Neill — "That the engineer communicate with the railway authorities and request that (he department make up the road on the north side of the railway at Waiwera township to the proper width, this portion of road being within the railway line." On the motion of Cr Hay a transfer of slaughtering license was granted from James Shiels to William Boyd, R'jmabapa. Proposed by Cr M'Neil, seconded by Cr Hat — " That the clerk notify all persona slaughtering within the county that unlea* their fees are paid forthwith their licenses will be cancelled." Proposed by Cr Johnston, seconded by Cr Hay— "That the engineer and Cr Mitchell arrange re fence on new road Pomahaka Downs to bush."
