MASSACRE IN NEW GUINEA. FORTY PERSONS KILLED.

j Cooktown, February 25. ; Terrible news is just to hand from New ; Guinea. A party of savages attacked the ! miners on the Mombare goldfields on | January 14. Mr Green (the Government agent), six miners, five native police, and 28 native carriers were butchered. There art no details at present. February 26. In ' connaction with the massacre at New Guinea it was stated that five miners were murdered in attempting to escape down the river on a raft. This is scarcely accurate, and it ia believed tha roporfc has reference to the experiences of the men who arrived at Sydney by the German warship Falke. Two men (Fry and LaylarJ were murdered, but; the miners state that Ohlsen and Davis escaped. Evidently two separate attacks were made, because Mr Green was alive and well when the miners took to the raft. Later particulars ot the massacre show that Mr Green, having deoided to shift the police camp to higher country, was er-gaged in the ereotion of the building, aided by three native police, the others being employed in clearing the surrounding country. Green went on the, top of the structure, leaving his arms on the ground. It is supposed that one of the native police engaged on the building treacherously signalled the others to make the attack. Being defence* lees Green fell an easy victim, his body being terribly mutilated. February 27. It is feared that three whites, who remained on the Moombare goldfield after their mates left to go down the river on a raft, have been murdered by the party which, massacred Mr Green.
