PICNICS.
KBJIPTHORNE, PROSSER, AND CO. Messrs Esmpthocne, Froiser, and Go's, employees, consisting of those engaged at the Stafford street warehouse and f aotory, as well as those at the Burnside ohemical works, held % picnic at Taiori Mouth on the 24th. The picnickers left town by the southern express in the morning, and journeyed as far as Titri, where they joined the s.«. Staff*, ani were conveyed down the river to the Taiori Mouth. The weather, although not altogether favour* able for outdoor amusement, cleared up soma* what after the party got into the country, and on arrival at the picnic ground it was Found possible to carry out % regular sports programme and also to indulge in games of various kinds in the opan air Without any di«comfort. On the return journey in the Stiff* Mr Smith, manager of the Burnside works, presented tha priz-is to the winners of tha various events at • the sports, and the party, which numbered over 100 persons, reached town by the express train in the evening. THE PHOENIX COMPANY. On Cup Day the employees of the Phoenix Manufacturing Company held a p>*cni6 in one oE Mr M'Kegg's paddocks at Healey. The party, which numbered over 200 persons, went out to Henley by the morning train, and notwithstanding that the weather was not all that could be dosired, they spent a very enjoyable day there. Various kinds of games were entered into with great spirit by moat of the picnickers, and a good sports programme was also carried out, the party returning to town by the express in the evening. THE NEW ZEALAND CtOTHINQ FACTORY. The employees of the New Zealand Clothing Factory were not very fortunate in the choice of 9. day on which to hold their picnic on the 24-th. A large, party went out by speoial train to Waifcati, but on reaching there they were driven by the rain to take shelter in the public hall. Fortunately they had a band with them, and their services were brought into requisition to provide music for dancing, which was kept up with great spirit for the greater part of the day. The sports, which ifc was intended to hold had the weather been fine, were, it is almost needless to lay, postponed.
Mr W. A. White has been appointed registrar of marriages, ice., and vaccination inspector for the Tokomairiro district. The Queen's pink pearls, Empreis Frederick's seven rows of pure white pearls, and Grand Dacheis Marie of Russia's superb necklace of the same gems rank among the most valuable jewels in Europe.
