The frequenters of a certain coffee-room had > long been weary of the boastful chatter of a I certain commercial traveller, and it was with [unbounded satisfaction that they saw him
" taken down a peg " the other evening. " Had a glorious day," he commenced as usual. 11 Went into old L— «-'« shop at V , and came oob with a £300 order." Some of his hearers doubted his statement, and said so. Instantly the boa*tful "commeroial" dived a hand into his bag, and pro* duced a book, which he handed round for inspection. " Oh, the entry's here right enough," said • meek-looking stranger in tho corner, " though it's very strange." "What's very strange?" demanded tho other. "Well, I don't remember anything about •uoh an order. "You evidently don't recognise me as Mr L of V , and"-: But the boastful " commercial" snatchtd his book and fled, amid the laughter of the company. " Ha ! ha ! " roared one. « That's rich I Lucky you were here to take him down, Mr L !" . The meek-looking stranger leaned over the table. " I didn't say I was Mr L , sir," he replied with a grin. •• Don't know the gentleman any more than that bouncing fellow did."
