UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the University Council, held on Monday, was attended by Dr Hocken (in the chair), Dr-JJurns, the Hon. W. H. Reynolds, Messrs G. G. Rutsell, James AHen, M.H.K., aud D. White. Dr Bcown aud Mr G. G. Russiell were reelected to represent the council on the High Schooln Board of Governors. The Registrar reported th»t the Government had declined to give compensation for land taken for railway purposes at Barewood, and ib was decided, on the advice of the council's ; solicitors, to get a professional report on the . matter. A report of the Mining School Committee, with regard to the appointment of a lecturer and atssayer, was the»i read as follows :—: — Your committee met on the 26th nit. and conside ed applications received from six persoii3 j desirous of obtaining the appointment of metallurgical lecturer and assayer. After full consideration of the qualifications submitted, your committee recommend that Mr F. B. Stephens be offered the appointment by cable ; the salary to bo at the rate of £300 a year and no class fees ; assays as per scale aud Guly for those not connected with the battery plant. The dutfes of the officer to bo tho.se stated in schedule B of the last report of this committee, with the ordinary duties of a lecturer on metallurgy, as per calendar, and as directed by the director of the School of Mines. The appointment to be for one year from the Ist April, 1897. In the matter of further accommodation at the Schnol of Mines, the registrar reported the alterations that have been made, and brought up a pjan and estimate of the cost of extending the building Gift. Y< ur committee think that the extension of the buildiDg "ought to be deferred for the present. The legistrar was instructed to arrange for utilising forms from the museum for seating the large room at the School of Mines. The matter was dealt with in committee, and it was decided to adopt the recommendations of the committee. Mr Stephens is expected to arrive in about five or six weeks' tima.
