Re Manure Analysis.
TO THE EDITOR. Pie,—- I am afraid " Southland Farmer" has not digested the points in my letter on this subject. The thiDg in simple enough. My experience of the colony is that vendors, as a, rule) specify the particulars of manures. In the cage of soluble phosphates this is especially to, as the percentage of this ingredient in * manure makes ib more valuable ; hence it if to the interest of vendors to show it. In reference to farmers being perplexed, there is no reason for this, uuless they are unable to calculate tho unit value to total value. To compare the values of any manures (so far as ingredients are concerned only) the best method to pursue it to take tho arbitrary unit values given, and multiply the total units as already shown. Resulb is the total value. When this is done with two manures of exactly the same description tho result will show which is the cheaper by comparison. • Butfor the purpose of toientifio application of manures according to value, this is ft nutter which will take columns to describe. Now tbab the Government intend to appoint tf> chemist for tho Agricultural denavtiuetri the
farmers will benefit; substantially from his advice, and^they will thiw be, saved both money and worry in the indiscriminate use of manures quite unfitted for aparticuUr crop and soil.— l *m, &C, , A. J. KIDSTON-HUNTEB. Dunedin, December 5.
