(a) This gives White the better opening, as Black having neglected to play p-k 4 on his first move never has ihe' opportunity' of doing so afterwards. (b) This is not so much to prevent Xt or B-Kt 5 as to prepare for an advance on the Q's side, but in any case it is not a judicious proceeding. (<;) Apparently Black found that if p-b 3, White conld sacrifice the piece with a compensating attack. Certainly the complications arising from White's moves, B-Q 3 and Q-Kt 4, were difiicult to work out in actual play. (d) A bold but conclusive combination ; any other move would lead to a draw. (c) H<j cannot stop the pawns on the queen's Bide.
