The Windsor Magazine for October contains 9, portrait of Dr Conan Doyle by Archibald Cromwell ; an appreciation of Dr Doyle's work, by Hugh S. Conan Doyle — surely enough of Dr Conan Doyle ia one number to make the magazine attractive to the many admirers of " the creator of Sherlock Holmes." The leading hero is » novioe in the ranks of war correspondents, but nevertheless he succeeds in heading his more experienced companious, and manages to forward his despatches detailiug a skirmish through to London in advance of them. Guy Boothby contributes an interesting tale entitled "The Great Dives Blopement." Ooulson Kernahan's tale, "Captain Shannon," is drawing to a close, and a tale by lan Maolaren is announced for the November number. The illustrations are as numerous as ever, and leave nothing to be desired. We are pleased to_ note the steady advance in popularity of this excellent newspaper. Bach of the issues for several months past lias been cold otiis shortly after publication, notwithstanding an addition of several thousands having been made to the number printed. . Musical magazines have a difficult matter to make ends meet even in old countriett, and it is therefore specially gratifying for us to be able to oongrsbulate the propcietor of that excellent local journal the Triad on its continued success. The ' Christmas number has just been issued, and presents a very attractive appearance. The cover is printed in gold, and tiia number contains several views and portraits in addition to a special supplement illustrative of Maori life and traditions. The contents are, as usual, bright and entertaining.
