Notes from Reefton. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
Reefton, November 23. Cumberland.— The new make of stone in this mine has developed into a 3ft reef. The stone is soft, but is expected to harden. The drive on the line of reef is extended 9ft for the week. Dark Mine.— A large amount of ore is visible in the foot wall winze below No. 5. The quality is not so good as the hanging wall, but is highly payable. The reef here is -?s"t wide. There is no change iov r the week in No. 2 Dark. The ground v hard, with a little quartz intermixed. Exchange.— The reef cut through in the surface tunnel is 7ft wide at the top and sft, Sin at bottom of the tunnel. The quariz is sugary, with a little gold. The contractor have driven 82ft 6in through nice country. November 28. Saturday midday quotations :— Big River, 243 to 25s ; Bniler dredge, 7a to 7s frl ; Cocksparrow divdsrp, Is 61 1^ la 9i ; Cumberland, Is 9d to 2s ; Dillon Extended, 2s to 2s 3d ; Exchanga, la to Is 3d ; Golden Lead, 2s to 2s 3d ; Hetcule?, 2? to 2s 3d ; Humphrey's Gully (paid up), 18s to 20s ; Intfewood, 9d to Is ; Lyell Creek, 2a 3d to 2s 6d ; Lord Edward, 2s to 2s 3d; Keep-it-Dark",' 27s to 28s ; No. 2 «outh Dark, 2s to 2s 3d ; Success, 6d to 9d ; Alpine, 15s to* 16s ; United Italy, 9d to Is ; Welcome (paid up), 4s to 4s 6d. N.B.— Owing to the limit of business the above quotations are nominal. Returns.-— Keep-it-Dark, 4540z amalgam from 95 tons (clean, up) ; Hercules, 51oz amalgam from 65 tons (clean up) Buller dredge returns, 270z 4dwt gold for 132 hours' dredging. Big River. — The mine manager reports :— "Since last report the surface tunnel has been extended 22ft ;— total distance since stattiug, 100 ft up to date. The country at present is very ; good-looking for coming upon stone at any time. The stone between No 4 and No. 5 levels is finished, it having come back into the old stope3 and cut out. In No. 3 level we have two men still prospecting, but co far have found no solid stone." Lord Edward.— The contractors have started another contract-for crosscutting 100 ft.
