WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The annual meeting of this County Council Was held jn the Counoil Chambars, Balmeretori, on the 25fch ult., at whioh there were present— Crs Clark, J. Hartstonge jnn., M. Isbiater, D. Kennedy, R. Matheson, T. Muir, D. Ross, and J. Stewart. The Clerk presided and read the section of Hie acb relative to the election of chairman, and invited nominations for the position, when Cr Kbnnedy moved— "That Cr Muir be appointed chairman for the ensuing year." CrD. Ross seconded the motion. Cr IBBISTBR supported the motion, and recommended that the chairman should have i half-yearly statements prepared, as information for coanoillors, showing the financial position of the council. Cr Matheson, in also anpporting the motion, inggested that the ohairman should accompany periodically the inspector and visit the several portions of the county and ascertain from personal observation and inquiry the requirements of the ratepayers. The CHerk said that Cr Muir being the only candidate nominated, he declared him duly elected chairman. Cr Muih, on taking the cbair, thanked the counoil for the honour done him in re-electing him ohairman, although he was in favour of the position being a rolling one. However, as the counoil desired him to take the chair, he did so, and would discharge the duties to the bast of his ability ; and if it was thought it would be advantageous to the ratepayers that he should visit different parts of the district, he was quite willing to do so, and would be glad of the assistance and advice of oounoillora In their respective ridings to point out to him what was required. He would be pleaded to |nake himself acquainted with the different Jiltriets in the county.
