The proportion of expenses to levonuo on the several lines, calaulated on an annual average, for the respectire periods of 1896 95, was as follows :— North Island— Kawakawa, 109-59, 81-88; Whangarei, 8944, Si 51; Kaihu, 52-68, 62 62; Auckland, 7463, 73 79; Napier-Tara-naki, 7231, 72"36; Wellington, 66-54, 70-76. Middle Island- Hurunui-Blnff, 6346, 6819; Greyinouth-Biunner, 55 70, 50 09 ; GreymouthHokitika, 47 07, 49 42 ; Westport, 43 75, 43-10 ; Nelson, 98-58, 99 22 ; PiotoD, 102 93, 112 78 ;— grand t.fcil. 65-84, 68 95. On the HuruDui-Bluff seotion the total number of tickets issued was 127,395, as against 144,156 for the corresponding period of last yetr. but setson ticket, 1 ) numbered 2210 ugainsb 1877, while the revenue from passengers was £13,258 13s lid againsb £13,320 Ba. From parcels, luggage, fco., the revenue was £2518 16s lid against £1802 133 3d ; from goods, £30.939 2s 2d against £27,732 5s 7d ; from naiscell&atous, £745 14s 6d against £765 10* 2d ; and from rants and commissions, £1889 19s against £1744 6s 3d.
