SOUTHLAND CHAMPION PLOUGGING MATCH.
(From Our Own Correspondent ) iKVERCAnaiLt, August 5. The twenty-fourth annual ploughing match under the au3pices of the Southland Chimpion Ploughing Association was held to-day on Mr Alexander Gray's farm, near Bratxholm. The 'weather was perfect and the attendance the largett oil, record. The ground was too frosty for any very bonnie ploughing. bafc the judges (Messn John Brown, ' Robert Blair, and Thomas Hannah) were tuxtd to their utmost to get the judging done before dark. Th« usual gorsecutting and horse-jumping matches were also held — Mr Alfred M»son winning the' former, while Mr Swa'etf won the jumping con'ess. The arrangements wore very complete, j-reat credit being due to tho seoretary, v Mr J. A. Mitchell, who has now been si cretary for 16 of these gatherings. Class C.-Single furrows— P. M'Dirmid (Ponton plough), £4. 1; K. Waldron (Ponton), £3, 2; J. M'lutosh (Ponton), £1, 3. D. M'Oallum also competed. Glass J).— Digger plough— James Ronald (Southland Farmers' I. and JB. Company digger), £4 and. digger plough by J. ' Stevenson, to be. won twice, 1 ; Johu M'Nee (John Stevenson), £3; 2; Donald Bes-ett; (John StovenFdo), £2, 3 :D. Hardy (John Stevenson), £1, 4; William Gray, jun. (John Stevenson), horae cover, 5. John tadee. Walter Grieve, Jame3 Cungle," Walter Howella, David Clark, and Thomas Grant also competed. The annual dinner was held in the Prince of Wales Hofel in the evening.
