A DOMESTIC TRAGEDY.
Auckland. July 8.
Intelligence has been received at Cambridge that a Nativa at Maungataubnri has shot his wife. The alleged cause is jealousy. A con* stable has left for the scene of the tragedy, ' July 9. At Maungatautari a Maori named Turou murdered his wife and then shot himself.
Constables Brennan and Forbes, of Cambridge, have visited the place, and their investigations show that the man and bis wife frequently quarrelled. On Tuesday evening the woman went to fetch water from a oreek. The man, who had planted a gun in the oreek, followed and shot her dead as she was getting water. He then pufc the child on bis back, put the gun to his chest, and pulled tbe trigger with his toe, killing himself instantly. Tho child eacaped.
Ab the annual meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club on Monday night a good deal of amusement was created, by a lapsus lingua made by the Hon. G. M'Lean. As chairman of the meeting he was bsing questioned as to why the committee did nob ask for the consent of the club before pnrohasiug tha now racecourse, and in replying he said that the money was jutt as well in that property as it would be in the bank. This remark provoked the audience tolaaghter. Then someone observed, "Better"; and the question was asked, " In which bank ?" Then the laughter was renewed ; and when the chairman (evidently not bearing the question) added, " And probably a good deal better," the risible faculties of those present were excited considerably. Prior to this it was obvious that there were all the elements of a storm in tho meeting, bnt they were disfiinated by this little iooidanli.
