As ah instance of the manner in which a liability could be brought home to a defendant-, Mr Hall (sayn the Southland Times) quoted a case in which a person who was responsible for the keeping in. order of a fence and did not fulfil his duty was held liable for the value of a horse which escaped through that fence and made its way in'o another paddock where a baysttck fell and killed the animal.
By the .Tongariro, which left" Lyttelton on Saturday, Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., of Dunedin, forwarded 20 Lincoln ram lambs to Monte Video. The lambs were selected from the well-known flock of Mr Henvy Overton, and is the first shipment of purebred sheep to South America from New Zealand.
