COURSING.

FIXTURES. August 5, 6, 7— National C.C.'s meeting.

SOTES BY MASTEB ITOBATH.

Mr W. MAuley acted as judge and' Mr W. Render.- ou as slipper at the meeting held oa the Forbnry Plumptoa last week, and they did their work well, though on the ficbb day too mush latitude was allowed the hares in some of the courses. The sport was excellent all through, and I am surprised, seeing that the admission * fee bad been lowerod to a shilling and footracing added to the crdimry attract ions, that ' more of tho general public did not turn up As it was, the attendance, though larger thin usual, was not up to expectations. Mr Lethaby's win in the Cup was well received. He is an en-thuftias-t in coursing, and has patiently put up with many reverses, prior to thin season. At the -smoke coucrt basing the praises of the g-trne in a most honrty fanbion, pointing oubiu the ' OQUrae of ft ' Capital littlo speech that courMug was a fine sport 'for the poor man, providing him with exercise' and health and a little excitement at the same "time. . Mr Myers (the president of the club), Mr Williams (secretary), and others connected with the management of the meeting dtsei've thanks for the large' measure of success that was secured. Conr»ing in Dunedin is ssife in their h&nd«. In the foot-

racing, the finals of which have had to be postu.tponed, Sir. W. Burk acted as handicipper, Mv W. Mills aa> starter, and Messrs S. S. Mjeri, J. .'. H. Jowitt, and J; M'Don»ld as judges: A full ' ytpott of .the meeting; is given below. -' -. The l&te Colonel North as a oourser was a

- great central figure a few years back. He ■ ap.,pfrared.ia the Euglish coursing world aboub eight years ago, his sensational purchase of Fullerbon at public motion for 850gs soon placing hiai upon a pinnacle of fame, says, the London Sportsman. His earliest connection with the sport waa antecedent to this, for in the autumn of 1887 he bought three greyhounds from Mr P. O'Rourke, Moran— viz., Mwk Maid, M»sk Man, and Mane Maid, the prioa being about £500. Fullerton was uot the only purchase made by the colonel at the break-up of the Short Flatt Kennel that Saturday afternoon, for he also gave 510g8 for Miss Glendyne, 450gs for Troughend, 20Ogs for Bit of Fashion (dam of Fullerton) 160tfS for Miis Kitten, &o. Lord Lm-gen, as the owner of Master M 'Grata (thcico winner of tho Waterloo Cup), was deemed to hive accjtnplished a feat that would prove unique in Waterloo records for all times. Bub Colonel North not only equalled, but eclipsed it. He ran first and second for the Cup in 1839 with Fullarton and Trbughend, and oarried it off by the aid of Fuller! on in the tares following years. Nor did this graud dog's great triumphs stand alone. A yousger brother to Fullerton in Simonian (whom the colont-I bred from Bit -of Fashion) carried off the Waterloo Patsa in 1891 and the Plate in 1892, whilst Troughend ran up for the Purae in 189Q,. H»d Fullertoa baea able to perpetuate his species (he colonel's further luck might have been different, but with about a score of the beat -bitches in the country put to him, never a pup was forthcoming. Despite his ag* — he was pupped in 1887— Fullerton is said to be cow looking wonderfully fresh and well t and to EMiam visitors he was shown with eveu greater pride than the beat of the thoroughbreds.

Nitrate King had the pace of Indian Ranger, and did nearly all the work in a longish course after a dodgy hare. Favonius raced clean away from The Assyrian in a long slip, and just succeeded in getting one turn out of a fast hare before the escapes were reached. Hasty Girl led Cuckoo 20 lengths and drove to cover, Cuckoo getting her solitary score in the snaps of a turn to the escapes. After a no-course, Cabin Boy led from Wflstmeath aud turned thrice, but then died away, and the latter woikinK to cover secured the verdict ; but there cannot have been much in it either way. Cavatina led up from Apple 810330 m and won on his pace, both dogs shaping poorly in work. Bryan O'Lynn led Mer£au«er a couple of lengths to a dodgy hare, and scored 2 to 1 ia a brief trial. Kate Kearniy raced past O»borne in the run up and Bcorcd nearly, if not quite, everything ia the course. Humber led by three or four lengths and scored a f <jw points, but Merchant, notwithstanding that he came a bad cropper, lasted the longer and ran up a sufficiently heavy total to give him tha decision. Lillie Lanjctry was faster than Solicitor, leading up by half a dozen lengths, and the latter did not score, while the slut turned twice and wrenched in driviug to tho e3capea. Game Lssj led by three lengths, wrenched a few times/and turned, Fbhsr Kins: being beaten pointless, Banucckburn and Miwic ran an undecided, but ia the second trial the former led up and had .the advantage ia the work, at which both shaped well. After a no-course, Indian Cloud led up from Hailstorm and turned to the latfcer's teeth. Miekie Free led up and turned twice, and.Bagle •Eye then "turned and killed. EUingham led from Reconstruction, and kept in front nearly all the way in on indifferent trial. Robin led up from The Coanel, and won easily. Black Feather led by half-a-dozen lengths and scored everything in a coursewhich was not productive of much work. Blizzard led up by a couple of lengths, but Witcblock then got in for a few points, and Blizswd- terminated the course by killing— the judge'B verdict in favour of the latter creating considerable surprise.
