GORE.

July 7. —Heavy rain commenced on Thursday .afternoon, aud continued without intermission for about 60 hour?. The WaiUaka stream was the first to overflow its banks, and then the Mataura rose more rapidly than it has done for many year. 0 . On Saturday night the river had come iv at Jacobstown, and made its way along Ardwick and Fairfield streets, and the intersecting streets between these and the main street were flooded. In the latter street the water in some cases was right up to the doorstep. Several families moved to other places, only in some instances to find that they would have been better where they were. Fortunately on Sunday morniug thingH had taken a turn for the better, and the water went down almost as suddenly as it rose. The damage done in the town has not been very great, but the accounts from the country are not so satisfactory. Another foot of water here would have made tbe damage very serious. Although all the low-lying ground in J£ast Gore was flooded at an early stage, but little damage was done there.

Fire.— On Friday morning the Gore Public School was discovered to be on fire, and eventually was completely destroyed, nothing being left but the chimneys. Part of the building was old, and altogether it was not a very sightly structure. The children were looking forward to a glorious holiday, but their hopes have been nipped in the bud, ax operations are to be commenced at once in the Town Hall pending the building of a new schoolhouse.

Weather.— The weather seems to have quite cleared up, and to-day it is bright and fine.
