THIS BOOK is a Hißtory of the Life and Work of the Rev. J. F. H. "Wohlbbs, Missionary at Ruapuke, vritten by himself — the original Work h&viug been published in firemen in 1883. Coming to New Zealand in 1843 he established iiiuself as a Missionary amongst the Maoris Ut Ruapuke. He converted communities, to use bis own words, of loathsome savages, sunk in poverty and degradation, into communities ef prosperous, civilised human beings, receiving for many years no remuneration whilst bo doing, but providing his own food out of the soil, and teaching the Maoris to do the same after ' a civilised manner, thus saving people's soals end their bodies as well. He preserved and - fully records the old Maori' mythology (a sublime one), the cuViOdians of which all died before his own demise.
