FATAL FIRE.
Auckland, July 6.
By a fire which occurred in Wyndham street lasb night a five-roomed house and shop occupied by Richard /Diary snd his family were destroyed, and Jame3 Hughes, aged 72 years, lost his life. His body, dressed in a nightshirt, was found after the fire was extinguished. Hughes, who lodged with Diary, was overpowered by the smoke aud euffooated. His body was not much burned. The building was 'one of a block of frar owned by the Sailors' Resfe. The whole blook is insured with the Commercial Union for £1100. Diary had his Furniture insured for £80 in the North German Company. When the water was turned on for the fire the water main opposite the City Club Hotel burst and the column of water thronn up smashed in the front .windows, broke the lamp outside, and flooded the bar, causing coubiderable damage to the stock.
