ALLEGED BLACKMAILING.
The hearing of the charge against ex-Detec-tive Kirby of levying blackmail was resumed to-3ay. Arthur'Hume, Commissioner of Police, «aid that in November of 1394- he received a complaint! from Mr Herman's solicitor, against Kirby. He passed it on through Inspector lEmerson to the prisoner for an explanation, jwhicb was made. Accused reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. The charge against Bassett was then taken, and after some evidence had been given the case was remanded for tbe arrival of the Talune on Wednesday. Mr Wilford complained that the Jbail was prohibitive, and asked for a reduction, »nd he also offered to geb four or eight sureties jfor. a total amount of £400 in place of the two *t £200, but the stipendiary magistrate refused Ibe requests.
