A STATE PAWNSHOP.
A deputation from the Benevolent Trcuieei waited on the Premier to-night to urge upon him the necessity o! setting up a State pawn shop. The Rev. Mr Van Sfcavern (chairman) aaid they had observed with great pleasure the introduction by the Premier of a Usury Prevention Bill, and trasted he would carry it into effect this session; bub they thought the measure would not be complete unless a olanse was introduced in it by which » Mont de Pieta or State pawnshop should be constituted. The cost would nob be more than £20,000, and a charge of 12 per cent, would provide sufficient funds to cover expenses and 'would be far better than the 80 per cent, the* poor had now to pay. The Premier said the represent itions of tho deputation would receive the fullest consideration. He believed the proposal bad a good deal of good in it fqr pooc people, and that it would be in their interests. He would make provision for second - hand dealer* in a bill whioh was being introduced, and prevent them acting as pawnbrokers with* out a license.
