A gentleman well-known in flnanoUl circles in Welltagton is rep* rted to have made about £40 000 in Auckland milling investments during the past two j ears.

One of the remits of the b&d weather in the louth last week was the flooding of the Hokonui coal mine, nhich, it will be remembered, wm one of the securities in tho hands of the Colonjal Bank which it was recently propoied to Bell to Mt ssrs A. Lee Smith and J. B. Reid. The destruction wrought in the mine is so complete that it is believed tho mine Trill bare t» be abandoned. * %
