PENINSULA.

July 2.— The ordinary meeting of the Povtobello Road Board, held in the board's office ou Saturday, was attended by Messrs Dickson (in the chair). Seaton, North, Cross, Kellas, Maciudrow, Hinkley, and Milne. '1 he inspector having reported on the road fro-n Broad Bay to The Camp, it was resolved that as the board's account is overdrawn the matter stand over till funds are available. On the motion of Mr C oss it was resolved that a la'-e of 3<i in the pound be levied on all rateable property in the. district/to be payable on Ist July. Mr Walter Gutbrie wrote forwarding a cheque for JEI2, the proceeds of a concert recently held to raise funds to nnke a footpath from Portobello jetty to the post office, and, oa behalf of the committee, reques^d the board to place tlie amount to the footpath account. It was decided to subsidise the amount to the extant of 10-i in the pound, and the cliairmati, Messrs Hinkley, Macandrew, and Milne were appointed a committee to consider what kind of footpath w»uld suit, and report to the next meeting. The Secretary of the Bo3pital and Gh writable Aid Boards notified that the bond's contribution for the year ending March 1897 would be— Hospital Board, £U 13s ; Charitable Aid Board, £78. The tenders of J. P. M'Cartney for metal and that of W. D. Wright for posts and rails were accepted. The Secretary of the Dune«iin Cycling Club wrote asking the board to reduce the toll to 61 on Sundays at Waverloy, instead of the present prohibitive one of sa. The Chairman remarked that the act prevented them from differentiating the charge, and the cUrk waß instructed to reply to that effect. The Rate Collector reported that £11 6s (W had been collected fo>- the month. The treasurer's balance sheet, duly audited, was adopted. Accounts to the amount of £59 18s v» ero passed for payment. Kntertainment.— A very enjoyable entertainment, under the auspices of the Peninsula Rifle Club, was held in the club' 3 hall, Sandymount, on Friday evening 2*>tb ult. Mr Ij. D. Robertson presided. The programing consisted of readings, duets, and solos. Songa were contributed by Misses Gallicbau, Fitzgerald, and Tubinan, and Meesrs J. T. Wilson and Deaker. Miss Drmnm and Mr DeaUer contributed a comic duet, Master Duckworth a violin solo, aud Mr Henderson a reading.. A sailor's hornpipe was danced by Mr Kilgour. Miss Burnside played the accompaniments. The entertainment concluded with the farce "Box and Cox," Miss C. Dick, Mr D. Nyhon, atvd Mr Anderson sustaining the characters. A dance followed, Mr A. M'Kay, jun., making an efficient M.C. Concert.— At the school hall, Portobello, on Friday evening, 26th ult. an enjoyable concert was held in aid of the funds of the Kifle Olub. Owing to the wretched weather and bad roads the attendance was not up to expectations, and the takings at the door will only about cover expenses. Songs were contributed by Misses Keenan and Samson, Messrs A. Dempster, S. Al'Dnnald, and Cray; duets by Mi->s Samson aud Mr Cray and Messrs M'Donald and Dempster ; and a clarionet duet by Messrs M'Lennan and Anderson. Mr Dickie gave a veutriloqui*! entertainment. The audience were very enthusiastic, and almost every item was encored. Mr E. Cunningham, befiides playing the accompaniments, gava a pianoforte solo. First clas» refreshments wera provided by Miss Durham. Major M'Cartney, who was in the chnir, in thanking the performers, said the concert would bs repeated in about a couple of months when he hoped for a better attendance. A dance followed. Tomihawk.— The regular meeting of this Road Boird, held on Saturday, was attended by Messrs A. Smail (acting-chairmtn), Math>son, Dooley, Miller, and Henderson. Mr R. Millar's tender was accepted for breaking metal at Is MJd per yard. The surfaceman was instructed to repair the road when the carting was finished. It was reßolved to plant marram gras 1 * (to be scrubbed) on part of the ridge near the lagoon and to plant lupins oppo=ito the island. It was decided to widen the Main road 4ft to sft near Mr Dooley's. The clerk was instructed to write to the 6t. Kilda Council drawiug their attention to the bad state of the rovi from the Tomahawk boundary to Mr Taggart's, through the removing of the guns from Lawyer's Head. Mrs Morris wrote to the board asking to have her rates reduced as her house had been destroyed by fire. As the valuation of all properties had been fixed for three year*, the board decided it had no power to deal with the matter. The secretary of the Charitable Aid and Hospital Boards notified that tho board's contributions for the year-endiug March 3897 would be-Charitable aid £16 8a 6d, hospital £7 5s 10d.— Accounts were passed for payment for £7 Si lOd.

Peninsula. Road Board.— The regular monthly meeting, held on Saturday, was attended by Messrs ,Stuart (chairman), F&irbaim, M'Curdy, Ro we, aud Robertson. Messrs W. Robertson and J. Garr's application for. leave to erect a fence' along the centre of roadliue fronting Mr Garr's property was granted. Mr J. M'Tainsh, of S.tndymouat, applied to have the unused portion of roadlines closed through and adjoining his property.—Resolved, that no action bs taken in the /meantime. Mr T. Begg appeared before the boar, with a petition signed by eight ratepayers in the township of Bayficld estate asking the board to metal the roads in the township.— The chairman; with Mr Begg, wjw authorised to get the opinion of the board's solicitors, the chairman to report at next meeting. The clerk was instructed to write to the Tramway Company asking them to make the road good at tho railway crossing at Miwelburgh. Also to write to Messrs H. North, R. Pryde, W. Somerville, jun., Rev. A. Cameron, and Mrs Cutten (Anderson's Bay), W. Lake, and J. J. B*ilie (Sandyinouut), requesting them to cut and clear the torse off the road bounding their properties. The secretary of the Charitable Aid and Hospital Boards notified that the board contributions for ilia year ending March 1897 would be - charitable aid £103 14s 3d, hospital £46 Is id.— Accounts were passed for £91 7s sd.
