ROXBURGH.

MINING. June £9.— Nothing is talked of here but the pegging out of reefs. On' Saturday .last an experienced miner informed me that for eight miles from Campbell's iGully the whole country is pegged off. It is rumoured even that parties" from Manuherikia have been going out at night. On the other side of the watershed, Invsrcargill people have been busy, and the ground bristles with peg?, which is an assurance that there will be busy times in the spring, and the revival'of prosperity is looked forward to It is rumoured here that the Anglo-German syndicate has purchased the Hercules No. 1 claim, which at present ia on good gold, though the ground is very rough. A new paddock has been opened out with satisfactory results. The No. 2 Hercules ,has not been working lately, water being scarce. ' The manager is at present erecting an elevator close to the river and adjoining the No. 1 claim. . The Roxburgh Amalgamated Sluicing Company have during the past week been running one elevator owing to shortness of water, and unless rain falls within the next few days the Herrules No. 1 will also be affected. Mr William Peters, the genial manager, i» erecting another elevator to work the ground stripped in the beginning of June. Mr George M'Lay, the well-known manager of the Dunediit dredge, is resigning to go to his dredging claim on the Lowburn. It is more than probable that Mr A. Young will become the succeeding dredgemaster. Operations were commenced this week to raise the Pioneer dredge, which belonge to the Dunedin Dredging Company, and which' has been sunk some time. The two pontoons will be separated and the buckets and other machinery taken off.The heavy hauling is to be done by Mr W. Keys'fl traction engine. • Several applications for mining areas at Roxburgh East and on the Old Man Range were granted at the last sitting of the Warden's Court here. Mr John Ewiug, owner of the Hercules No. 2, has pecgeil off fifty acres at Dumbarton Rock near Anderson's Flat.

The Roxburgh dredge's return for the past week . was 18Joz. On Mouiay she suspended operations,] for the purpose of lengthening the ladder by 3ft in order to work the deep ground in.thegorge.where Ihe company has recently applied for a fresh area. The gorge is above the present holding and below the bridge. The Ettrick dredge washed up on Saturday for 270z, wh eh must be regarded as verysatisfactory. If this continues, and it's to be hopei it will, the shar*holders may look forward to reasonable dividends. We have had a very mild and dry winter «o far,, but a change has been threatening for some time. Rain is much needed by the various mines, as it is an unusual thing to be short of water in the winter, when it is generally snowy and wet.
