' , [COPJBIGHT ] SYNOPSIS -OF PREVIOUS CHAPTERS. Chapters I and 11, —Pretty Belle Wayland, daughter of Mrs Wayland, a dashing but. not over well circumstanced widow, is at Brighton with her mother. She loves and is loved by Hugh Gilbert, a penniless soldier, and the two are bidding jpai-h other farewell, as hiai'egimentiß about" • to tail for India. Mrs Wayland has other scheme's for her daughter, especially, favouring a certain Lord Stanmore, a wealthy nobleman who has just come into Ma title. Bslle, however, declines to eneour»j»e Stanmore, and her mother threatens to tell Gilbert something which will prevent him marrying Belle. Sbealso writes to her sister, the widowed Lady Stanmore, apeakintr of her daughter's proposed marriage with Gilbert as " moral suicide." Chapters 111 and IV.— Mrs Wayland and her sister, Irady Stanmore, plot to bring Lord Stanmore and Belle together, Gilbert writes a letter to Belle telling her that he has met the daughter of Goloncl V ane, in charge of Miss Balfour, and both are returning to India. L-idy Stanmore stealthily obtains a copy of the letter for future use. Chapters V and Vl.— Lady Stanmore contrives to have Mrs *nd Miss Wayland and heraelf invited to liedvers Court, the seat of Lord Stanmore, and whilst there intercepts letters between Belle and Gilbert, as well as introduces Sir Dick Probyn to Belle. Chapters VII to IX.— Lady Stanmors continues her wicked plots concerning Belle aad abstracts her letter to Gilbert, which is in the form of a diary. Ktanmore confides to his sister-in-law, .the f<tct that he is half in love with Belle, and Bhe adviserhim to wait until stie tells him it is time to speak.
