Chess Items.

In the intercolonial match New South Wales r. Victoria played by telegraph on the 25th ult., the end games' to be adjudicated show a- certain win for New South Wales at two of the six unfinished games- namely, those between Mesßrs Scott (N.S.W) and Langham (Vie), and Messrs Waller (N.&W.) and Noall (Vie). In the four others it is difficult if not impossible to demonstrate a win for either side-but in' one — that between Messrs Crane (NS W.) and Tullidge (Via), the former has the slight advantage of three pawns for a minor piece, but the pawns are not far enough advanced to nnke a win certain. The result on tbia basis is therefore that N.S.W. won the match by 3 to 2. A Village of Chess Players.— Taere is a village in Austria called Storbech, of whiab. all the inhabitants are chess players. The game is regularly taught in the schools, and every year there is a public examination in the game, and a distribution of prizes in the shape of chess boards. In the match Oamaru v. Asuburton Clubs the former won by 5 to 2. Four gamys are left for adjudication, but it is thougLt they will not affect the result.
