OTAGO AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETY.
Thd monthly meeting of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held at the secretary's office on Saturday morning, and attended by Messrs James Smith (vice-presi-dent, in the chair), T. Brydone, M. Sinclair, W. H. Tftggarb, A. C Stronach, W. D. Stewart, D. Bacon, C. S. Reid, R. Charters, W. C. Smith, W. Patrick, J. A. Stewart, A. Bl'Farlane, J. Bhiel, A. Tocld, J. Dathia, and Hon. T. Fergus. — A considerable amount of correspondence was received, including letters from Mr J. D Rit-chie, secretary to the Agricultural department, notifying that the quarantine regulations as suggested by the National Sheepbrcedera' Association wonld be discussed at the next Intercolonial Stock Conference; and also in reference to the dehorning of cattle, stating that Mr Park is of opinion that the operation does not cause excessive pain, and that some bullocks experimented on same months ngo were doing well and are vastly improved iv appearance. — It was d cided to appoint a sub-com-nittee to consider a circular received ag t.> the advisibility of •nominating a number of reliable men to act as judges of the ■ different clasass of stock. — A letter was received from the secretary of the Waitahuna i Farmers' Club suggesting thtb the Government be approached with a view of inducing them to supply rabbit-proof wire netting to the settlers at cost price. It was decided to take no action at present, and allow the club to make application themselves. — A letter was received from Mr A. Johnson, manager for Joseph Finon and Co., offering to present two silver cups for competition for field lurnip3, and in addition to present gold and silver medals to the successful competitors each year. — Mr M. Sinclair moved — "That a special , vote of thanks ba accorded to Me Johnson, as representative of Messra Joseph Fison and Co., for their generosity in presenting the cups, and the secretary be instructed to advise him that the society will arrange for the- competitions." Seconded by Mr R. Chabtees, and carried unanimously. — On the motion of Mr ffHßGtus, chairman of the dir«otova
of tbe Agricultural Hall Company, ife was decided to insert an advertisement cordially inviting all ladies and gentlemen interested to attend the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the Agricultural Hall on Wednesday afternoon.— Arrangements have boon made with Mr J. B. MacEwan, chief dairy expert, to give a lecture on dairy iug mutter* ; and also with. Mr S. S. Cameron, M R.0.V.5., on the common ailments of dairy stock.— The following gentleman have been appointed judges :— Chease aud export batter, Mr J. B. M*e« Ewnn ; butter, hame, and bacon, Messrs W. Wright and W. Sutton ; grain, Messrs Thomas Meek and D. M 'Donald; soeds, Messrs D. B. M'Laren and A. Cameron ; root*, Messrs A. Douglass and J. Duthie ; bread and ponltry, Messrs William Wood and John Hopkins ; farm and country exhibits, D. B. M'Laren, A. Douglass, andD, M 'Donald.
