THE CENSUS FOR THE COLONY.
The Registrar-general's department, has now compiled the rough census results for the. whole colony. They slvovr the Burapenn population; in 1896 to be 703,008 (exclusive of the Chatham; Islands, the returno foe which are not to himd)i, as compared with 626,658 shown in the 189 L census and 578,482 in the 1886 census. The increase of population from the year 1886 to. 1891 was 43,176 persons, or 12 per cent;. The population in 1896 is made up as follows :— Counties, ... „. ... ... 391,510 Boroughs 307,fi05 IsLiulb (exclusive of Chathama) 732 Shipping ... ... ... .« 3,251 The returns show that the increase. of population in the North Island has been gre&tly ia excess of the increase ia the South Island. The population of the North Island in 1891 was 281,455, and the census juifc t»ken »how» the i figures for that ial»nd to be SIO.SOS', an increauu at the rate of 21 per cent. In 1891 the population of tho Midldlc Island was 344,711, and this yeur the census- *howi the population &b present! to be 362,127, an increase- at the rate of 5 per < cent.
