The New Zealand Markets. TO THE EDITOR.
Sin,— l have noticed in your paper from time to time the good advice you have given the farmers since this season's crops came in— that they should hold for higher prices. lam quite of your opinion, and that 2s per bushel could have been got for all the surplus oat- grown in New Zealand this season. Tha Australian markets will require all we have to spare, and even 2a is not a nigh price. If the oats were all in the merchants 1 hands instead of the farmers', they would soon be 2s 6d, and my opinion is they will be that before the new crop comes in. It is early in tho season yet, and the demand for most of the Australian markets has not yet commenced. The oats have not threshed out well in Southland this season. There will bo a shortage, I believe, of about one* third of the estimated quantity when the statistics were taken. At the auction ealo in Dunedin a fortnight ago there was a fall of Id to ljd per bushel. That might have been avoided bad the various agents been firm and withdrawn all they had for sale by auction unless at the ruling prices. If they had a parcel or two that must be sold, sell it privately as best they could, not by auction at a lower price in a risinc market, and at a time when there need be no fear of a permanent fall, when all that was required was firmness. The Invercargill market Is guided by Dunedin. - If prices rise there, they will do so in In> vereargill, and vice versa. As to wheat, 3s lOd to 4s is about its value, as , America can supply our beat market, Hydney, as cheap as we can ; but theirs is not so^good as thd mo3t of New Zealand wheat, the difference U| value Bsing at least 3d per Jjushel.— l am, *c,» JAILE3 ATTOXBSO& Edington Manse, Wright's Bush, June 8.
