Since Robert dive carted out as empire fa India for the British, no man hat so distinctly reclaimed from dark races what may to fitly termed an empire mMr Rhodes. Whether he may be termed adventurer, buccaneer, flli* buster, or statecraan is a matter of contention, but the fact remains that by his potent mdi* viduality he is building up a mighty South African Empire to the English ; and, by th« practical genius that seems to govern all bit actions, he is bringiog the hitherto wild lands aorth and floubh of the Zambesi into the bosom of civilisation, and the glorious Union Jack now flutters in the breeze nnder many parallels _ of latitude in what was only 'a feir years aga described by Stanley as Darkest Africa. The career of Cecil Rhodes has been one of magnificent good fortune, but it has bsen the result of pre-eminent abilities, and those abilities directed by a happy chance in a groove exactly fitted to the benfc of his temperament to dare in big undertaking?. ' Admiration is applicable to many things. It may be towards an individual character, a beautiful picture, a beautiful face, a splendid 'piece of scalpture, a racehorse like Istnglats or Ormonde, or the plumage of a bird of paradise; but the lover of a good smoke will prefer to admire the delicious flavour of the Indian Chief Cigarettes, which are now taking the New Zealand market by itorm.
