Mr A. Koch informs the New Zealand Times that the statement that Mr F. W. C. Sturm, whose death was recorded this week, Cfctna out to New Zealand as a member of the soienti&c exhibition under Barou Hochstetter is incorrect. Hr Koch says that Mr Sturm was tent; out to Australia in 1838 by the Prussian Government to search for botanical specimens. Later on Mr Sturm came orer to New, Zealand, and after botanising in the Rimutaka and other districts, went on to Hawko's Bay and Poverty Bay, finally settling at Wairoa, where he married a Maori wife. He was, says Mr Koch, a man of great botanical knowledge. For many years he was one of the most prominent hoiti* cuHuitrt in Hawke's B»7«
The late Mr James Gammock bequeathed the greater portion of bis entnte to the Christchurch public library. Tbe endowment is estimated to be worth over £20,000. He has also left £200 a year to tho North Canterbury Education Board for the purpose of founding fouc scholarships in connection with Canterbury College. Dr Murray, Bishop of Maitlaad, who was present in Dunedin at the consecration of Bishop Verdon, preaching on Sunday, 24th, in Wellington, said the Irish Text Book had not been in use in the national schools of Ireland for the lasb 30 yean, and iti introduction had always been opposed by the Catholic bishops. He daalt at length with the history of the book, pad ohftrwtcrUed ib v a burleaaue and » farce.
