He is never likely to set behind hand in the publication of never-before> published gamea, as he is at preient giving his readers some fine things from " the match now going on in spirit land between the departed woithies John Drurumond and W. Chall cc, of Great Yarmouth. Genius has been defined as " infinite capacity for taking pains "; the gallant captain must possess qualities akin te genius, by the exerciie of which he row lays claim to the title World's Champion Solver. Jf any. ne.disputes his right to the title, let him trot out his record. Here is Captain Challice's :—ln the past four years ho has furnished solutions to 3361 chess and draughts problems and end games and 655 prize competitions and puzzles, while his success in other branches have secured him 4163 public acknowledgments, and raised his record to the grand total of 4949. It would be no ordinary task even to keep the score of all this, and we think no draughts or chessplayer will seek to cavil at the claim put forth by the captain. Remarkable Blindfold Performance.—At the rooms of the Salem Institute Draughts Club one day in March Mr W. Gardner, the Yorkshire champion and blindfold expert, met 22 players of the Leeds Institutes' League in a simultaneous blindfold match. Play began at 5.45 p.m. and was prolonged until 11.15 p.m., the result of this marvellous performance being 11 -wins to the "single player," 4 losseß, and 7 draws.
