MAUNGATUA.

June 1. — A social meeting was held In (^^^B tiou with the Christian Endeavour Society^W West Taieii Church on Tuesday evening the wee™ before last. There was rather a sparse attendance, owing no doubt to tlie night being a cold one. After ample justice had been done to an excellent tea, the meeting was opened with a few well-chosen remarks from the Rev. J. Kiiklaad, who occupied the chair. Addreises were also given by the Rev. Mr Fisher, from Porfc Ohalmevs, and by Mr Smeaton (Moagiel) and Jai Bett (Dunerlfn). Selections were also very wqII rendered by the choir, and the proceedings werj brought to a close by the singing of a hymn and the pronouncing of the benediction. Serious Fire.— A fire occurred at about a o'clock last Thursday morning, which resulted in the destruction of a bare and oowehed belonging to Mr David <'arruthers, farmer, of this irit. not aware that Mr Carruthers had the buildings insured. Shooting Accidents.— Two accidents of this nature occurred last week at Berwick. One of the sufferers in this affair was Mr William Shennan, of the Berwick and Maungatua butter factory, who was out shooting with a fiieud and who not having been noticed by this friend, received part* of the contents of his gun in the face. The other percon who sustained injury, is Mr William Grant, of Beiwick, who Was al?o wounded on the face from the gun of another man who was shouting at a pigeon. Happily the injuries sustained in both cases were not of a serious nature, and neither of tho parties has been prevented from following his regular occupation. Agbicultural.— Since writing my last, threshing has been, brought to a close in th« district, and as the weather has continued fine ploughing and carting away grain ia biiing steadily g\ne on with.
