WAI WE RU.

June I.— On Tuesday evening the Presbyterians hold their annual soiree in the church, aud H

proved a pronounced suceeis both financially and sooially. The speakers were the Rev. Mesirs Jolly aud Curry. The church was comfortably full, and the decorations of flowers, <*c, by the ladies of ths congregation were very good. The singing was led by Mr Dunnet, and Mr Hardie, the organist, contributed tbe instrumental part of the programme, though Miss Putterton, of Clinton, played her own accompaniment to her solo, "Crossing the bar." Miss Wilkinson also gave a solo, " Consider the lilies," in a cultured and finished stylo. The accompaniment was, to my mind, a little too loud— a slight fault often met with in country places. During the evening three presentations were made, in each case the gifts being a Bible. The recipients were tho Misses Ross and M'Lean, on their .leaving the district, tbe presentations being made on behalf of the Endeavour and Sunday Bchool, of which they were active members. Miss Violet Shedden's presentation came from the day 'school pupils. All three young ladies will be greatly missed, and they carry with them the good wishes of all for their future prosperity. Agricultural.— The weather during the past two weeks has been beautifully fine, with occasional slight frosts at night and clear fine daye. Consequently all out-door work is being got well ahead. ' Crossing the River.— The lord at the river, about which so much has been said, has been paved and cemented, and is now An use for all traffic, and to all appearance the work done is-all that can be desired. Seeing the great benefit it has already proved, it is really a wonder something of the sort was not done before. Of course time will prove the durability of the work or otherwise At present, however, we are much indubted tG our ever-watchful councillors and o&gineer. Agricultural.— The dealers in stock are again among u« making large purchases, which may be taken an an indication of an improved prospect in trade. As I have before stated, turnip crops are unusually light. This is now more fully realised since the stock bos been put on. Fortunately, however,' there is a larger quantity of chaff than usual. Oh the Wing. -I regret to say that sevoral of our young men are leaving the district for different parts. It is to be hoped their departure is only temporary, as we can iv afford to lose such desirable fiiends and neighbours from om\ little flock. Improvements —Mr W. B. Anderson, of Kelvin G'ove, has made extensive improvements lately in the lawn, garden, and shrubbery attached to hia recently-built house, many choice shrubs and plants being added to the grounds. Others are also making their autumn trimming and cleaning up, and altogether there is a prosperous air about the district. The tradesmen in the township are busy, e*ch having plenty to do, which is oertainly a healthy sign. The storekeepers, too, are kept fairly bu»y.
