WORKERS' UNION.

Waimate, May 26. At & meeting of the New Zealand Workers' Union a letter was received from the' Progressive Liberal Aesjciabiou suggesting that; the various Labour and Liberal political organisations should adopt a uniform platform of eight planks in view of the coming general election. The executive instructed the secretary to point out th*t the fewer the plauks the better it would be and the more likely they would be to become law. It was alto pointed out that until tho Upper House was reformed nothing of a progressive nature would be enacted, and therefore the union would take the reform of the Upper House as its main plank. The reports on the Dunedin. labour market, contained in the "Journal of the Department of Labour " for May, is as follows :— Building trades : Tradesmen fairly busy. Engineering trades : Very little business doing ; r&ngemakers are busy. Clothing trade : Fairly bmy. Tailor are slack. Shirt factories : Busy. Boot trade : Busy ; almost all hands fully employed. Retail trades : Very fair trade doing. Pcinblng offices : Fairly busy. Sash and door factories : Very busy. The starch factory is busy. Ua^ skilled labour: The number of idle men has considerably decreased duriug the month. Eighteen men were sent to Government and private works. A meeting of the trades unions and other labour organisations ia Auckland received the nominations of Messrs Regnn, F*wcus, Ro3ser, and P&terson as candidates for election to the House of Representatives. It was d'.cided to invite them to express their views a moi t1!t 1 ! hence. The Hon. John M'Kenziewas present, and addressed the meeting.
