WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of this county counoil was held in the Council Chambers, Hawksbury, on Friday last, at which there wers present— Crs A. Graham, J. Green, M.H.R., J. Porteous, A. S. Ofbell, and W. Souter. Cr Green was voted to the chair in the absence of Cr Bjlt through illness. PETITION. Mr James Malcolm and seven other ratepayers in the Lower Harbour districb petitioned the council protesting against the closing of the top psrb of the original road in Lower Harbour West through Mr C. Smith's property until the agreement made with the council in May last was fulfilled. — The petitioners to be informed that a meeting of ratepayers will be held at Lower Harbour School about the middle of July to decide whether the road is or is not to be closed. Atkinson, secretary to the New Zealand Counties Association, Wellington, wrote re the appointment of a dalegafca to represent the council at the meeting of the association to be held on the 19th July next. — The council appointed Mr James, Green, M.H.R., as their delegate at the conference referred to. Mr L. r Kelly, Pine Hill, applied for permission to build a hut on the roadlina at Pine Hill between Mr Bunbury's and Mr Spritt's land, occupied by Mrs Barrett, until the roftd was formed. — The clerk was instructed to r^ply that the council has no power to grant the request. Mr W. E. Griffen, Macraes, wrote drawing the attention of the council to the state of the Bonanza road, leading from Stonebura creek to the mine, and asking tha council to render it fit for traffic. Several culverts and some formation were required. An expenditure of £40 was asked for before the bad weather set; in, as forming part of the revenue derived from the mine. — The inspector was instructed to examine the road with Mr Griffer* or Mr Phelan and rsport at next meeting. Mrsß. Stone, Lower Harbour, applied to have the old Lower Harbour road closed, in accordance with an understanding come to with the council. — Mrs Stone to be informed that the application must now be left to the decision of the ratepayers' meeting shortly to be called for the purpose of deciding the question. Mr Robertson, Sawyers' Bay, wrote drawing attention to the state of the bridge over the creek close to his section.— Referred to the inspector to attend to if it can ba dona by the surfaceman, and, if not, to report to the council. Mr A. Semple, Double Hill, applied to have the deviation of road through section 8, block 111, North Harbour and Blueskin district, de-fined.—-Mr Semple to be informed tha 1 ; the inspector has been instructed to attend to the matter afc the earliest convenience. Mr John Ro3siter, Waitati, wrote asking the council to give him access with a sledge track to section 39 of the Hon. M. Holmes's Mount Cargill estate.— The clerk instructed to reply tlut the council's financial condition precludes them from complying with the request. Mv T. Brown, Beaconsfield, applied to bave the boundary between two education seotioDS be had leased and the .council's Recreation reserve fenced, and offered, in the event of the council finding the material, to do the labour, and if the former came to more than the latter to pay the difference. — The clerk instructed to inform Mr Brown that if be erects a fence exactly similar to that erected between the reBerve and Mr Kane's property the council will pay half the coat of same, Bubject to the inspector's certificate being given that the fence had been erected to his satisfaction and that the price was fair." Mr W. Barnes, Warrington, applied to hava the deeds of old roadline closed for new roadline forwarded to him. — The application to be attended to. j Messrs Mullaney and Son, Merton, wrote | iutimating that they intended re-erecting their fence along the roadiine of the Main road, and j asking permission, as the old fence had not been erected on-the surveyed Hoe, to erect the new one one on the proper line. — The application was granted duriug the pleasure of the council without any prejudice to the Crown's rights and the public interests. 'Messrs Young and Thomson, Pur&kanui, wrote offering to give £2 if the council would form the balance of road leading to Murdering Beach. — Referred to the inspector. . The Town Clerk, West Harbour, wrote in reference to certain work required on the boundary road between the borough and the county. — The council agreed to place the county surfaceman on the road with the borough surfaceman, as suggested by the Borough Council, and to empower the inspector to instruct the i surfaceman accordingly. j The Receiver of Gold Rsvenue at Naseby wrote in reference to the revenue received by him, and the amount to which the council was entitled.— Referred to the member for the district. The Secretary to the Treasury, Wellington, wrote on the subject of the goldfields revenue received by him which had been collected in the county. — Received. OTHER MATTERS. Proposed by Cr Souter, and seconded by Cr Ghaham— " Tnat as the bridge across the Waikouaiti river is considered by this council to be unsafe for traffic other tbAn foot passengers, it is now resolved to cose the bridge for a period of three months from the date hereof, or until the repairs necessary to be effected are completed; that public notice in

terms of section 110 of ' The Public Works Aolfe 1894' be given, and that; »n advertisement 09 ' • inserted in the Ofcngo Daily Times and also i% the Palmeraton and Waikouaiti Timen ; and 14 is further resolved to appoint William Rendall inspector, and he is hereby appointed to prosecute any and every person who crosses or" attempts to cross the bridge with any vehicle after the Ist June prox,"— Carried. The chairman was authorised to pnrchaia from Mr John Murdoch the old tramline bridge over the lower Waitafci stream, if the same will be sold at a reasonable price. The Aoting-Chaibman repotted that in terms of resolution of council passed at latt meeting the chairman and the architects, Messrs Mason and W*hs, had accepted the tender of Messrs Milne and Son, Dunedin, for the" taking down and re-ereofeion -of County Council buildings, the amount of tendee being £288 for- 10ft walh. The unsaccessful tenderers were— fe. Waiies, £296; B. Mill, £298 j and A". Lydou, £327. On considering the matter, the council resolved to vary the contract, substituting 12ft in place in 10ft walls, and to accept the tendei of Mebsrs Milne and Son at £328. Loavo of absence was granted to Or Greea / during (ho session of Parliament. The council then adjourned.
