The Co-operative System. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,— l should like to call the attention of the public to the system of giving work on what is called the co-operative system (or more commonly known amongst us labourers as " the unemployed"). Take the Lilburn roads and the Merrivale estate settlement roads. The first-named lasted two years'; the second has been on eleven months. These works are in the district I live. I am married, with a -family, paying rates, yet living on my labour, from hand to mouth, and others are like me in the district, yet we cannot get a show on this kind of work at our very doors, while there have been, and still are, young unmarried men employed on them — men who can shift anywhere in search of employment, and go from colony to colony. I have known several after the Mburu road work was finished clear out to Coolgardie. The m&vried man has to stand his ground and bring up his family, let the times be good 'or bad. Ido not think lam saying too much when I say the married ones should have the first chance.— l am, &c. Labourer. Orawia, Southland, June 1.
