Dear Emmeline,— l he members of the West Taieri Cycliug Olub held their annual ball on the evening of May 16 in the Societies' Hall, Outram. The ball was a thorough success, and the committee dcerve praise for the able manner in which they carried it out. The weather was fine, and there was a large attendance, the young folk responding to the invitations from far and near. Excellent music was supplied by Messrs M Bryde (violin), M'Neil (pianoforte), and M'Lean (cornet). Turing the evening several prizes, won by members of the club during the season, were presented by Mr Wm. Swan. Mr Richar.lson officnted as'M.C. 'Many very pretty evening drvases were worn by the ladies present, a few of which I shall try to describe. Mies M'Lean wore a, stylish costume of maroon velvet with cream lace ; Miss Goodwin, evening dress of dovecoloured cashmeie; Miss Frances Goodwin, pink nuns veiling and white lace; Miss Grace Good- ~ wio, a pretty costume of white nun's veiling trimmed with buttercup silk ; Miss Grant, evening dress of pale pink caahmere with lace ; Miss Meston, evening bodioe of whiti cashmere, with black lace, black skirt ; Miss Duff, a very becoming evening gown of cream honeycomb crepon with lace and cream sti earners ; Miss Dickie (Mosgiel), a handsome dress of cream nun s veiling with green plush and lace ; Misses Batbgate (2), white sailor blouses, daik skirts ; Miss Bruce (Allan ton), stylish evening dress of pink trimmed with black lace and ribbon ; Miss Agnus Kemshall, a very becoming evening <lress of pale green with white silk and lace ; Miss J. Kemshall, a pretty evening dress of pink saieeu, with cream lace ; Miss M'L-od (Mosgiel), a lovely white cashmere with white lace ; Miss Keanan, a stylish dress of cream caßhm re, white la-e and pink ribbon; Miss Bella Hoddinott, evening gown of pink cashmere with white silk trimmings; Miss rarmody, white nun's veiling; Miss Krockitt, brown dress trimmings to match. Several others, whose names I did not learn, were also very prettily dressed. Dancing was k. pt up until the small hours, when all went home satisfied with their night's enjoyment.— Jack, spinsters' ball at mosgiel 1 . Dear Emmeline,— The spinsters' ball given by the young ladies of Mosgiel iv the Volunteer Hall on Fiiday, lpt inst., was a d-cided success. The weather was all that could be desired. Fully GO couples took tart in th« grand march, which was led off by Miss Nellie Flynn and Mr P. Taj lor. The directresses of ceremonies were Misses Nellie Flynn and Margaret Klder, and they attended to their onerous duties in a thoroughly capable manner. The committee consisted of Misses Nellie Flynn, Margaret Elder, Lizzie Hicks, Katie FlynD, Elizabeth M'Taggart, Janet Turnbull, JcsEie M'Taggart, Johanna O'Brien, Margaret Stephen, Sarah Cummock. The music was supplied by Messrs J. Allan (piano), G Beath (violin), and J. Wilkie (cornet). The following is a list of the principal dresses, all of which it is of course impossible to mention. Miss Nellie Flynr\(who was decidedly belle), was attired in a canaiy cashmere trimmed with Liberty silk and tea roses; Miss Margaret Elder, black silk velvet skirt with a shot silk bodice relieved With cream silk ribbons; Miss Mnry Davidson, pink nun's veiling relieved with pink Bilk and flowers; Miss 'Elizabeth M'Taggarr, pink cashmere and cream trimmings ; Miss Katie Flyun, black crepon relieved with cream silk, lace and flowers ; Miss Maggie Davidson, cream cashmere trimmed with cream silk ; Miss Rose Elder, cardinal silk blouse and heliotiope cashmere skirt; Miss Emma Murdoch, black crepon skirt and cream silk blouse ; Miss Lizzie Hicks, light grey tw«ed trimmed with cream bilk lace ; Miss Ruby Gibson, cream cashmere blouse and navy blue skirt; Miss Janet Turnbull, whito cashmere blouse trimmed with silk lace and blaok serge tkirt ; Miss Mary liiddell, maroon silk blouse and black skirt ; Miss Isabella Salmon, pink nun's veiling; Miss Johanna O'Brien, black cashmere trimmed with black silk lace and beaded gimp ; Miss Christina Hislop, grey Mosgiel tweed trimmed with cornflour blue silk and beaded gimp ; Miss Ruble White, nun's veiling relioved with blue silk trimmings ; Miss Grey, heliotrope cashmere and silk trimmings ; Mrs John M'Dnnald, cream nun's veiling trimmed with heliotrope silk ; Mis David Stevenson, pink cashmere blouse, black serge skirt; Mrs William Hawke, canary cashmere bodice, black serge Bkirti Mrs John Elder, a&vy blue serge, silk
trimmirgs ; Mrs Andrew Bringans, pale blue boiice, dark skitt. During the evening songs were contributed by Messrs Isaacs, J. Deaker (Duuedin), Thomas Watson, Jo>eph Allan, and otherß. Mr A. Campbell danced a sailor's hornpinp. Altogether the ball was one of the most enjoyable yet held in the distiicfc. Dancing was kept up until an e.irly hour in the mornitip, aud everyone weiit &way thoroughly talisflod with the evening's enjoyment.— Vibitorl
