BRUNNER RELIEF FUND.

MEETING OF THE LOCAL COMMITTEE. A meeting of the General Committee of the Brunner colliery relief fund was held in the Town Hall on Friday afternoon, when there were present— Messrs T. W. .Kempthorne (in the chair), W. Hutohison, M.H.R., G. Fenwick, D. H. Hastings, J. B. Thomson, and T. 6. Graham (hon. secretary). The Secretary reported having wired to Sir R. Stoat the decision of the last meeting es to disposal of the funds, and having received from the secretary of the fund at Wellington tka following telegram :—": — " Conference delegates Brunnerton disaster have decided that all sums collected on behalf of the fund be paid over to the Public Trustee. Would you kindly notify to all bodies and persons in your and surrounding districts holding funds to be good euougfe. to pay over the moneys accordingly. (Signed) E. W. Sane, Seoretary to Conference." Some formal correspondence was also placed before the committee. The Treaoarer to the fand, who was un&ble to be present, forwarded a memo, showing that the receipts to date amounted to £3014- Is 7d, accounted for as follows : Forwarded to Brauner, £100; on fixed deposit iv Bank of New Zealand for three mouths, £2500 ; balance open account at Bank of New Zea'.und, £275 ii lOd ; in hands of Otago Diily Times, £130 15s 9d ; expenses (stationery and stamps), £8 2s. On the motion, of Mr G. Fenwiok it was unanimously resolved — "That all moneys available in open account at the Bank of New Zealand be remitted at ouoe, with the deposit receipts bearing interest due in July ; that tho committee express the opinion tUnfc it would ba inadvisable to break the deposit receipt till maturity, and that all future monoys be remitted as received direct to the Public Trustee." Mr W. Hutchison thought that under the circumstances the charge of ona 1 per cent, by thCPublic Trustee was too much, and moved— " That in tha opinion of this committee the charge of 1 per cent, for tha management of the fuud it excessive, and that we recommend the conferenca to arrange for a reduct'on." Mr Fknwick remarked that the charge would amount to £260 per aunum. Mr Hastings said that it really amounted to 25 per cent, on the income from the fund, and he considered that was a great deal too much. Mr Thomson was of opinion that as the fund was the result of spontaneous contributions for the relief of the suffarars by a great disaster, the Public Trustee ought to fcake oharga of it without charging any commission. The Chairman said the administration of tha fund would involve a large amount of labour, and that 1 per cent, was not an exces3ive charge" ; they would not get anyone outside to do it for that. Mr Hutchison said the charge was not excessive commercially, bat it waa under the circumstances. The motion was carried nem. dis. A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman, and the proceedings terminated. The Hon. Treasurer of the local relief fand acknowledges the receipt of the following additional turns : —
