THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS. London, May 18.
The following compose the Eleven of England in the match against the Australians on the Crystal Palace ground : — G-. W. Hillyard (Leicester), Pougher (Leicester), O. E. de Trafford (Leicester), Briggs (Lancashire), Mold (Lancashire), Baker (Lancashire), Sugg (Lancashire), O. Smith (Lancashire), A. Ward (Lancashire), F. Ward (Lancashire), ' and Rawlin (Middlesex). The attendance was moderate though the weather was fine. The home team batted first, but were all disposed of for 114. The only double figure scorers were : Albert Ward (b Jones) 22, Sugg (b Trumble) 20, Baker (b Jones) 17, Briggs (b TEady) 10, Pongher (nob out) 27.; the above five totalling 96 out of the total 114. Jones bowled splendidly, taking eight wickets for 39 ; Eady secured one for 14. The Australians in their first innings lost four wickets for 108, the ohief scorers being : Donuan (b Rawlin) 59, Darling (c Mold, b Pougher) 41. May 19. There was splendid weather for the orickefe match to-day between the Australians and an Eleven of England at the Orjetal Palaoe, and there was a large attendance of the public. The wicket played very "well. The Australians oontinaod their first innings, > which dosed for 379, the chief additional scorers being Iredale (c Hillyard, b Mold), 21 ; Gregory (b Pougher), 154 ; Hill (c Smith, b Mold), 41; Trumbla (o De Trafford, b Pougber), 40. Pougher took five wicketa for 100, Rawlin two for 27 {sic). With 265 to the bad on the fir«t innings, the English began their second essay, bat a rot set in, and the whole team were disposed of for the wretohedly small score of 39, of which Ward (not out) made 14, and Mold (b Giffen} 8. The Australians thus won by 'an innings aud 226 runs. Giffen was in excellent 'form, and took seven wiokets. for 15 rnns, Jones securing three for 20. Johns made his first appear&no9 behind the wickets for the Australians, and performed with credit. ■ May 20. In the matoh between the Australians and , an Eleven of England, Iredale, who 'played steadily, lost his wicket when the score stood , at dSO. Gregory and Hill then formed a brilliant partnership, and added 113 runs to &he score in 75 minutes without either giving 9. chance. Trumble showed vigorous batting. Gregory was at the wickets for three hours and a-quarter, and gave two possible ohancse. His icore included 21 4's. I The bowling of Giffen and Jones oreated a panic among the Englishmen, and disposed of the whole eleven in 70 minutes with 20 overs. played in Philadelphia, one In New York, and one in Sau Franoisoo. . The team leavafor New York on September 8, and leavo San Francisco for Auckland on October 16 by the mall ateamer Mariposn. The match between the Australian!! ana ft South of England Eleven began at 'Eastbourne to-day. As four of the leading counties are engoged playing one another the English team is by no means a representative one. The following is the Hat. :— O. J. Kortright, G. Brann, J. R. Mason, Aleo. Hearne, Martin, Mead, Brown, Butt, K. S. Runjitainhji, Druco, Mitohell. The weather is Bne and the attendance good. The Australians took first innings on a capital wicket, and when stumps were drawn for the day they had losfc six wickets for 258. Giffm and Darling wera at the wickets for nearly three hours, during which time numerous changes in the bowling took place. The former playad brilliantly all round, but gave one chance early in his innings. Darling, too, gave a fine display of batting, and was ultimately o&ught by Korfcright off Mason, after scoring 115 Giffen waa bowled by Martin for a similar scora.The remainder of the team batted cautiously, and in the final 40 minutes three wiokets fell for 18 runs. May 23. With six wickets down for 258, the Australians resumed their first innings against the South of England Eleven, but owing to the inclemency of the weather the match was stopped during the day. When stumps were drawn the visitors had increased their score to 828 without the loss of any further wiokets. Trumble (not ou t) had wade 38 and Hill (not out) 83. The bowling of the homo team wan rathnr loos 9, May 21. The Australians declared their innings dosed without again going to the wiokets, The Englishmen in their first innings scored 131 for five wioketn, when rain once more interfered with the play and the match was drawn, greatly in favour of the Australians, In the match between the Australians and an Eleven of the South of England, Mead took two wiokets for 119, and Mason two for 40. The principal scorers for the Englishmen were :— Mitohell (c Darling, b Trumble), 24; Mason (o Eady, b Trott), 63; fiajnjifesinjhi (lbw, b Trnmble), 26. Trumble took two wickets for 50, Jones ona for 20, Giffen one 32, and Trott one for 13.
