THE POCKET KODAK.

The word " kodak " has probably given rise to more speculation as to its derivation than any other word in the English language. Ib is a word now m daily use, and because of the enormous number' of kodak photographic cameras used, is popularly applied to all forms of hand cameras.

The labest addition to the series of kodaks mide by the Eastman companies of Loutcm, Paris, and Rochester (New York, U.S.A.) is the pocket kodak now beiug extensively introduced into the colonies. It has, we are infotmed, taken tha different Aufctf»lian capitals by storm, an ital ready has those of Europe aod America. The pocket kodak is a complete kodak on a email scale, not by any me^na a plajthing, and can really be carried in one's pocket. It measures en the outside 2^-n by 2|-in by 3|in, weight only s£oz, takes pictures 2in by 1-^ia in sizj, and, loaded so aa to take 12 pic'.uues, co3to only £1 Is. It is provided with all the movements of the most expensive cameras, and its principal parts being made of aluminium, it is very light. It has a counter to record the number of exposures made, a brilliant view-finder to locate the image, and above all can be loaded and unloaded in daylight, thus making a dark room unnecessary. It ia so simple to use that anybody with average intelligence can make good pictures with it. The motto, " You press the button, we do the rest," is known the world over, and means tbat if the kod*ker has not the time or the inclination to develop r.nd print hi» own photographs, any kod»k dealer or photographer will do it for him, thus obviating all trouble.

These little kodaks are great favourites with cyclists, for the pictures are so microscopically sharp, clear, and distinct that they can bo easily enlarged to any reasonable size. Photography, like cycling, has come to stay with us, and come idea of the favour which theso little c*m ras have found may be gathered from tbe fac" that iv three mouths from their introduction over 60,000 were sold, and within tyro months clo3O on 3000 have been sold in Australia alone. They are being manufactured by the kodak' factories at the rate of 700 a day, and necessarily give employment to a large number of workers.

The export of coal from G-cymoubh last week wa» 464-1 tons 7cwt. Tho quantity oi timbas exported was 92,482 ft.
