DEATH OF THE HON. DR POLLEN. Auckland, May 18.
One of the- c vrliest cottiers in the Aackland district ,p*sjed away at 9 o'clock this mousing at his residence, Avondale — 'namely, Dr D*niel Pollen, M.L.C., who h»d reached the advanced age of 82. Thß deceased had been sufferiug from diarrhoea for five days, whioh confined him to -bis bed, Dr EoberUou was called in to see . him yesterday. He was then very weak, and although apparently hatter "at »n early hour this morning he gradually becime weaker and died as stated. Tbe deceased lcavea a widow and fonr sons and fonr dtughters, all grown up. He arrived at the Bay of I»hnd* in 184-0. He was a member of ths uecond P»x Ministry, without portfolio, from July 1861 to Augnrt 1862, and of the second Stafford Government from June 1868 to June 1869. Having 'been appointed for fcbo second time to the Legislative Oouimil in 1873, be was Premier and Colonial Secretary of the colony from July 1875 to FeiTruary. 1876, when he took office under Sir Julias Vogel as 'Colonial , Secretary, and held the pott under that gentleman and Major Atkinson till October 1877. He was also Minister for Native Affairs from DecemW 1876 till be retired with his colleagues iv -October 1877. In the oW days of provincialism be held the position of General Government Agent in Auckland. - He was 1 * man of greaWbility, bat be "did not idei.tifj himself with public affairs outkide of politics. He established, however, brick workn at Avondale, and -wag also ch*irnwn of the Eist Goa>t Native ' Land Settlement C mpany. Ha was in the eDJoymeut of a Governmeat pension up to the time of his death. Tbe remains will be interred in thu Avoudale Cemetery on Wednerday.
