. (From Ooa Own Corbbsfondbnt.) Invkhca-rgilt,, May 9
Notwithstanding that the day and hour was very inopportune (Safurd*y, at 2 o'clock) the new hall of the Young Men's Christian Association was well filled (its first audu-nce) with leading representative ci\izoos and friends from the country, who had assembled to bid farewell to Mr William Tbdd; 'J*P. (nho is about to leave this tQWD, after a residLr.Cj of over 30 years, with his family for Western Aus'ra'ia), and preseut him with a purse of upwards of 240 sovereigns as a tiwgib'e proof of the high esti eui in which he is he!d by his many friends in Southland. The expressions of regret at hi« leaving *nd other tangible proofs of the sincerity of the friendship felt throughout tho district towards the man they had met to do honour to were more than ordinarily impressive, and when Mr Todd rose to reply to tbe many kind thing* th«t h*d been said by previous upeJcers — Mown J W. B.iin, J W. Mitchell, J. E. Wafcoii, J. A. Mit.cht 11, John Turnbull, Hon. H. Feldwick, and others — the scene was more like tbe good-bje to some dear one in a private family ttun the ordiuary farewell to a public man.
