He was from Erin's Isle. He had only jost arrived at Liverpool, and wanted to go to Manchester. They informed him at Lime street station that the fare was 2s 6d, " Bedad," says he, •• that's an awful lot of money; it'll be chaper to walk." Aud he immediately staited to do the 36 miles bo Cottonopolis. But when he gob half way he .felt rather tired, and thought he had bebter ride the other half. He vreat to the Watringfcon station and asked bhe fare by bhe next train to Manchester. Ib happened there was no third class by the next traiD, and the lowest fare was 2s. "What!" says he, "28 ! Sure, couldn't I get the whole way for 2s 6d ; be jabers, yez ■ won't do me that -way. I'll go back to Liverpool and ride all bhe way." And he did.
