In, the Wallace-Hodgson match the former was the winner by 7 games to I, and 1 drawn. Sydenham CheßS and Draughts Club.— The annual meeting was held -on, M onday evening at the rooms of the club. Mr W. H Meikleham presided. The secretary and treasurer read their reports, which were very satisfactory. Watts; committee, Messrs Partridge, Gibb, Meiklrbam, Bellamy, Dutton, Reynolds, and Menzies. Votes of thanks to the retiring officers and the chairman closed the meeting; With a view to increasing the popularity of the game of chess in Oamaru, Mr F. C. Crump, of the Uamarn Chess Club, has kindly agreed to comply with ihe request of several beginners, and holds a weekly instruction class during the winter. ,. A match will be played on the 24th inst. at Palmcrston South between representatives of the Ota»o and Oaniaru < 'hess Clubs respectively. It is anticipated that about 10 players on each side will be engaged. The players have not yet been deft, itely selected. 'Ihe Biooklyn Ches* Club has instituted a new Kin.i of tourney, with prizes of 20dol. and Bdol. Sixteen players were selected and paired by lot. Three minutes were allowed for the first eight moves of the opening, and afterwards the players had to move at the end of half a minute. Five seconds before the move haft to be made time was culled and at the 30th second the order was given to play l< very player on tha side whose turn it was had then instantly to make his move or his .game was lost. M. Lipscfaute gained the first prize and M. Hmea fcke second.
