HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
Toe ordinary meeting of the High Sohoolj Board of Governors was hold on Thnradayaften noon ; present — Messrs J. R. Sinclair (ohafc* man), N. Y. A. Wales, G. G. Russell, and D* Stenhouse. Apologies were received for the non-attendance of Dr Brown, Messrs J. F. M. Frassr, and James Allen. The Finance Committee recommended that accounts auaeuuting to £447 6s Id be pasted for payment. — Adopted. Miss Marchanfc, the lady principal of the Girls' Sohool, wrote asking the board to express au opinion as to the advisability of allowing girls outside the school to attend the High School Gymnasium. Mr Wilson allowed girls attending the State schools to attend the ola<sds, but refused to admit pupils attending private achoile. Th* writer thought thia was a justifiable attitude. The State schools were the natural feeders of tbe High School, and they should be encouraged to send pupil* to the classes. — It was decided that girls attending other schools, private or public, should ba allowed to attend the classes on payment of £1 le psr quarter. Miss Merchant also wrote stating' that if the board were willing she was anxious to establUh. a class for cooking and domestic economy in oonnectiou with the school. Such a class ought] to be well attended, for the teaching would be practical and useful to all girls in their home life. — It waa resolved to agree to $he suggestion.
A letter was received from the Waitaki County Council forwarding a copy of a lettei from the chief surveyor, Dunedin, asking th* county to withdraw an application to have the roadline from section 2 of 67. block 11, Oatnaru district, kept .open. — Mr William Aberdeen, tenant of leotion 2 of 67, wrote objecting to have the roadline closed. — The board decided to object to the closing of the road in question. The Secretary of the 'Education Board of Otago wrote asking for the use of the High Schools' gymnasiums on Saturday for the instruction of pupil teachers in and atound Dunedin.— Granted.
Mesdames W. H. Reynolds and H. Livingston and Messrs M. Cohen and C. W. Adams waited on the board to thank them for giving permission to hang a picture of Mies Dilrympte on the walls of the Girls' High School, and deciriug to know the moat convenient time for the hanging of the picture, the breaking-up time at Christmas being suggested as convenient. — Tbe opinion was generally expreued that the time suggested would be suitable, and after a conversational disomsion on the matter, the depatation retired.
