KAITANGATA.
May 9. —The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Borough Chambers on Wednesday, and was attended by Metsrs W. M. Shore (mayor), T. B. Smith, H. Cornleh, P. Welsh, J. Christie, and J. Muir. The Rev. R. Fi*irm*id wrote drawing the council's att'-ntion to the bad state of the footpath on Salcombe street, opposite the manse, Referred to the Inspector, with power to act. — Tha JMUyor of Brunnerton wiote thanking the inhabitants of Kaitangata for thtir contribution (£l9O 11) to the Brunner fund.— The Land and Income Tax department WJOte re the levying of rates. Received.—The inspector reported, recommending certain works on Salcombe, Bambridge, and Torquay streets. Ha also drew attention to the deficient street lightiug. Resolved, "That tenders be called for works as recommended, and that the question of deficient street lighting be referiecl to committee with power to act."— Day labour anci other accounts to the amount of £70 were pa* Bed for payment. — The following tenders .were accepted : — For contract No. 130, J. Todd ; for contract No. 131, Stephens and Cormack. Or Muir gave notice of inoflon, " That a general rate of Is in the £ be levied." — The Mayor and Crs Cornish and Christie were authorised to sign the burgess roll. Political.— Mr James Allen, M.H.R. for Bruce, delivered his pre-sessional address in Smith's Hall on Tuesday evening. The attendance was a v»ry large one, and Mr W. M. Shore (mayor of Kaitangata) presided. Mr Allen, in a speech of an hour's duration, criticised the speeches lately delivered by Ministers of the Crown, especially that of the Colonial Treasurer. Several questions were asked and answered satisfactorily, and, on the motion of Mr John J-'hnston, a unanimous vote of thankit and confidence wai accorded to Mr A'len. A vote of thanks to the mayor brought to a close one of the most successful political meetings ever held here. Accident —An unfortunate accident happened here on Monday afternoon. It appears that a party of shootists went to the I akes for a day's sport, and on their return journey one of them, Richard Gribbin, jun., was in the act of discharging his gun when it burst, and injured his left han<i to such an extent th»t Drs Smith and, Fitzgerald, who were in attendance, found it necessary to amputate the band above the wrist In charging the gun, a muzzle-loader, young Giibbin substituted a piece of damp r«g for wadding, which is supposed to have caused the accident. School Matters —At the first ordinary meeting of the newly-elected school committee, held on Tuesday nvening, a letter was read fiom the truant officer drawing the committee's attention to several mi»frtuteuieuts_in a report of the animal meeting which appeared in & local paper. It was uuaniinoucly resolved "Thut %hn clerk inform Constable Pool that the committee are perfectly satisfied with him as truant officer, and that this committee disclaim any connection with tlie report complained of." Coal.— The Kaitangata Coal- Company have struck a new team of coal in thoir new drive, and at the time of writing they were 6ft into it, and the quality surpasses any yet found in this district.
