A man named James Brooking, living at Kirori, met his d'ath under circumsts.nc(ja of a peculiar and most painful nature. He felt a pricking in his thraat while eating dinner, which became more and more unendurable, aud bleeding from tha mouth set in. He wenb to the hoepital, bat no cause could be found and no relief given. Tho poor fellow eventually died in agony. A post mortem, examination showed that ho had s<*a.ilowed a needle, which perforated a bloodvessel in tha f^tocnach. He leaves fi widow with five yourg chiHr> v in po.T eire ■ms v HDce»>.
At the first meotiog of tho season of the Hawke's B\y Philosophical Society beld at Napier on Monday last, tbe Rev. W. Colcr.so advocated the establiahment of a free public library and museum. He off'T'.d a cite free, and towards the estimated co. t of £4000 he offered an aggteg«te of £2000 on condition that the whole amount was raised by the 21st Deesmfcee.
