THIS BOOK is a History of the Life and Work of tfce Rev. J. F. H. Wohlbbs, Missionary at Ruapuke, written by himeelf — the original Work having been published in Bremen in 1883. Coming to New Zealand in 184-3 he established himself as a Missionary amongst tbe Maoris at Ruapuke. He converted communities, to UEe Lib own fvqrds, of loathsome savages, sunk in poverty and degradation, into communities ef prosperous, civilised human beings, receiving for many years no remuneration whilst so doing, but providing hia own food out of the soil, and teaching the Maoris to do thp s»me after 1 a civilised manner, thus saving people's fouls | and their bodies as well. He preserved and fully records the old Maori mythology (a sub- | lime one), tbe custodians of which all died before bis own demise.
