TABLE TALK.
Momday, May 4.
•The members of the Muncal Association have again commenced their pleasant and instructive nnuicaJ afternoons. The first meeting of the season was held .on Wednesday at Littlebourne Houso, and -about 30members were present. Miss Roberts is again secretary to- the association, and Miss Buisk arranges the programmes for each afternoon. The members intend meeting at different houses every alternate Wednesday during Che winter months, when a programme oousisting of frdm six to eight items will be arranged, as far as possible different names being on each day's programme. On Wednesday songs were rendered by Mra Thaomin, Miss Cutten, and Miss Edith Shandy and Mr* E-irdley Rsynolds, Mrs Finch, and Miss Bransome each played a piano solo. There was a short space between each item, and tea and coffee were served, between the first and second parts.
Amongst those present were Miz* Roberts, Miss Bufck, Mrs Turton, Mrs Sargood, Mrs Eardlej Reynolds, Mrs Fmber.lZra and Miss Robinson, Mrs Finch, Mis* M'Lean, Miss Shandj Mrs* Th'eomin,' Mfcs/Outten, &c. Ob Wednesday. Mis Denniston gave an afternoon tea at her residence in High street. About 50 guests were present during the afternoon, and although the weather war bleak, cold, and wet outside, inside all was bright, warm, and cheerful. A venr pleasant afternoon was spent* . there- being plenty of" room to move about in. Mrs W. BL Reynolds- and Mrs Dowling contributed socga which were much appreciated. Amongst those present were Mrs and the Misae* Reynolds, Mrs. Cameron, Mrs and Miss- Gillies, Lady Snout, Mra Fotheringham, Mrs H. La Cren r Mrs- and the: Misses. Roberts, Mrs Dowling, the Misses- Farquhar, Mrs Perstob, Mrs. Grey- (Port €hatmess), Mre and Miss Mackerras, Mrs Hugh MaoNeii, &c. Mra D.nnieton wore black ; Mis Reynolds, black costume with handsome Wack mantle, and black bonnet with magenta colour ; Mrs H.. Ec Oren, black, skirt with black silk blouse, bodice striped with white, and black hat; Lady Stout, navy blue lustre costume of skirt and jacket; Mrs Gillies, black costume, the bodice composed of handsome moire, black floral bonnet; Miss Gillies wore a smart costume of grey blue trimmed with bine Bilk and lacs, picture hat of green straw trimmed with, blue forget-me-nots; Mrs Grey (Port Chalmers), brawn trimmed wfth beaver fnr j Mrs Oatiway, black skirt, dark green bodice wfth sleeves of floral chine sitic. ThfrMisees-Guthrie-Smith, from' Scotland', art at present paying a visit to< Mr and Mrs Coningham. Smithy flffc Ritchie left for Ofiristcharch by tram on Thursday and' Mrs, .Ritchie fay the Cormna ok Friday to, join the lonic, which sailed for liCmdon- on* Saturday, the 3nf. Royse's house in Dnke street, and are cow living there.
Mr and Mra Lintott have rented Mr Jaofc Wright's house in Roelyn. Jadge and. Mrs Williams are at present spending gome time in Wellington, Miss Russell (Havrke'a Bay) is visiting. Danedin, and is staying at St. Olair. Colonel Fox is at present visiting Danedin. There are ramonrs of a tennis ball being given about the time of the Queen's Birthday races. It is to be hoped there will be a good demand for tickets should the bait take -place, and ,that a large number may be present. Mrs Robert Gillies leares this week for Auckland, where she intends residing for the present ; and her house in Park street, unless let, will be again closed for some time. Miss- Bessie Acland i> to be -married in | Ohristchuch next week to Mr Daan, of Wanganui. ' , i Seldom, if ever, has such a brilliant ball ' been given in Timaru as that of Mr and Mra j Moes, Jonas Jaht week to celebrate their silver weTKting. A large grain store had .been secured for the occasiOß, and the arrangements foi the ball were, perfect. Partitions were placed to divide the-rooms, \ forming two dressing rooms, card and"l smoking rooms, refreshment room, ' large sapper room, and the Bpaciofls battfiom; one part of .which was arranged as a drawing room. fcffec. 'J'hti entrance hall aud other- rooms were lighted -with Chinese lanterns, which, looked gay and bright. After supper the healths of Mr and Mrs Jonas were proposed, and the toast was received wibh. much enthusiasm, Me E. Gi Kerr being in- the chair. Mr and Mrs Moss Jonas were the recipients of a great many both valuable and handsome silver gifts, some being presented during the evening. A very larga number of guests were present-,' amongst whom were not a. few from Christ church, Ash burton, and other parts of Canterbury, proving in what high esteem the host and hostess are held In. the neighbourhood. '
